Your Garden in Winter

It's January, and we're about 6 weeks away from waking up our gardens for next season - isn't that crazy? Here's what you should be doing for the next 6 weeks to get the most out of your 2023 garden.

  1. Don't stress too much about what's going on in the garden. Your garden is resting. If you have anything planted, you'll want to water when we haven't had snow or rain for 30 days (make sure temperatures are above 40° and water in the earlier part of the day.)

  2. Plan!! Make a list of all the things you want to grow and plan where you will put them in your garden. This sounds like a simple task, but it actually takes a lot of thought and preparation. How long will the plants be in the ground? When is the optimal time to get each one in? How big will they get? What kind of plants do you need for pest control? The list goes on and on so grab out Denver Kitchen Garden Growing Guide to set you on the right path.

  3. Start your seeds or buy them if you haven't yet. Some crops require a long growing season and need to be started as early as....now. Others you can wait until March to sow. And others can go directly into the garden bed. One of the easiest ways for beginners is to Winter Sow the seeds in upcycled milk jugs. It doesn't require any lights or special equipment other than quality soil.

Starting in February, we'll start warming up our gardens to prepare for planting, but until then just REST!!
